Tennis Coaching

We have a dedicated and active coaching team at West Heaton, offering individual and groups sessions for Adults and Juniors of all standards throughout the year. All our coaches are DBS checked, qualified, licensed with full accreditation, safeguarding and first aid training. They all offer group and individual coaching. Please contact them direct for more information.

I was appointed as the Club Coach in August 2008, on a self-employed basis. The club is not liable for any events or lesson payments that I run. All monies will be paid directly to myself or a nominated assistant coach. We therefore will be responsible for carrying them out.

Richard Meadowcroft Assistant Coach

Level 3 Coach
Hourly rate: £26

Richard has experience coaching both adults and children. Having been a PE teacher for over 30 years, he now works full time at West Heaton delivering group lessons for Juniors and Adults as well as 1:1 lessons and delivering the Tennis Camps alongside Head Coach Andy Perry. 

Richard captains one of our Men’s teams and is a former winner of the Men’s Singles championships for 2 years running (2014 & 2015).

Jonny Healey Assistant Coach

Level 3 Coach
Hourly rate: £28

Jonny has over 10 years' experience. He is a former Mini tennis Cheshire champion and Junior County player. He currently plays for the Men's 1st team at West Heaton. 

Jonny is experienced in coaching juniors and adults of all ages and standards and also specialises in tots tennis (2-4 years).

Will Banks Assistant Coach

Level 3 Coach
Hourly rate: £26

Will has experience of working with Juniors and Adults, as well as teaching Sport in a school environment. He is a former winner of the Men's Singles Annual tournament at West Heaton, and is part of the Men's Teams at the club.

 

Available for 1:1 coaching on Tuesdays (9 - 11am), Thursdays (9 - 11am) and Saturdays (2 - 4pm). He will also be covering some group lessons and Camp days across the year.

Sue Morrison Assistant Coach

Level 3 Coach

Sue works at the club on a part time basis, covering some group lessons and camp days, as well as championing her work alongside LUSU and The LTA in ensuring Tennis is inclusive and accessible to all.

Andy Perry Head Coach

 

Level 4 Senior Club Coach

Hourly rate: £28

Andy has over 25 years’ experience. A former County player at both Junior and Senior Level he currently plays for the Men's 1st team at West Heaton.

Andy has worked at numerous clubs in his time. He has coached 5 Junior players who reached Wimbledon at Junior and senior level, as well as coaching County champions and former British No 1s  in their age group. 

Andy now specialises in developing all ages and abilities in his role as Head Coach, and has built a fantastic team of coaches and leaders who assist with the programme.

Andy also provides a first-class stringing service as a qualified UKRSA stringer of over 30 years. 24 hour stringing service provided.

Junior Courses

Junior coaching courses run during school term times and cater for children from reception year at school (youngest age) to Year 13 (upper 6th at college). All groups are graded according to age and standard.

We have courses running 6 days a week: Monday to Friday after school, and Saturday mornings. To see all available courses please use the 'view courses' yellow link.

If you are unsure where your child fits in, or you want to arrange a Free Trial Session to see if the session is right, please contact Head Coach Andy Perry.

LTA Youth Start Courses (mixed and girls only (Prime Video))

As well as our year-round Tennis programme, we also run seasonal starter classes. Our LTA Youth Start courses provide a 6-week course and free equipment for each child. Look out for start dates during our peak season as places tend to get booked up quickly. Details of these courses can also be found on the yellow link. 

Eligibility: Children can attend coaching sessions as a member or non-member. Members receive a discount on all groups and camps and can book courts outside of coaching times using our online booking calendar. Details of Junior Membership can be found here

Booking: Use the yellow link to book the course that is appropriate for your child's age and standard. Click on the course, register, then book and pay securely online.

Coaches: All coaching courses are run by one of our main coaching staff who are qualified, licensed, DBS checked and Safeguard Trained. We also have Tennis Leaders assisting busy groups. 

Junior Camps

During the Schools Holidays we run Tennis Camps for children aged between 4 (reception year at school) and 16.

 

Our Camps are split into:

Mini Camps* (8.45 - 9.45 daily) For children in Reception and Year 1

Main Camps* (10 - 3.30) For children in Year 2 through to Year 7

Teen Camp (1 - 3pm) For children with experience of Tennis who are in Years 8 - 11

*Early Drop off (8.30am) and late pick up (5pm) options are available for a small additional fee.

Our Tennis Camps are a brilliant way for children to learn tennis, or improve their skills. With experienced coaching staff delivering some of the best camps in the region, they provide variety, fun, expertise and structure which allows children to learn at their own pace, have lots of fun, meet new friends, and improve their co-ordination, hand-eye skills, team work, resilience and concentration. 

 

We recommend booking in advance for all our camps to avoid disappointment as places go quickly!

Booking: All dates for the year are listed on the yellow link and can be booked by clicking on the camp of your choice. Camps can be booked for individual days, groups of days, or for the whole week. Discounts are available for siblings, members and for full-week bookings. 

Coaches: All coaching courses are run by one of our main coaching staff who are qualified, licensed, DBS checked and Safeguard Trained. We also have Tennis Leaders assisting busy groups. 

Adult courses and sessions

Rusty Rackets

A weekly (all year round) Adult group coaching session. Each week full time coaches provide technical and tactical drills to improve individual shots as well as an understanding of how to play the game better. 

Tuesday 7:00pm - 8:00pm (Improvers up to Intermediate level)
For those at the beginning of their Tennis journey or fairly new to the game looking to improve their shots and gain some consistency rallying. 

Tuesday 8:00pm - 9:00pm (Beginners up to Improver level)

For those who can rally, but are still looking for consistency as well as wanting to work on individual shots to move them to the next level. More drills, with tactics linked in with technique so players can improve quickly. 

Booking: Online via yellow button

Eligibility: The sessions can be booked by members but we also allow non-members to attend a maximum of 3 sessions. Please note as a non-member you can only attend the club a maximum of 3 times before you are expected to join. So if you are trying out other sessions as well this would limit the number of times you can attend this session. 

Cost: £6 per session payable at time of booking

Ladies Morning

All standards welcome. Lots of drills, lots of coaching and lots of fun. Players often stay afterwards for a much deserved brew and biscuits!

Thursday 10:00am - 11:15am

Booking: Online via yellow button

Eligibility: The sessions can be booked by members but we also allow non-members to attend a maximum of 3 sessions. Please note as a non-member you can only attend the club a maximum of 3 times before you are expected to join. So if you are trying out other sessions as well this would limit the number of times you can attend this session. 

 

Cost: £7.50 per session payable at time of booking

Beginner courses

We also run some separate beginner courses (Tennis Xpress) during peak season for Adults. Look out for details of these as and when they happen or contact Head Coach Andy Perry for more information.
